Refit of the Sailing Vessel TATOOSH

- Installation of the Cherry Tongue and Groove -

Cherry Tongue and Groove was ordered from Launstein Hardwods. I originally wanted the select grade but it was entirely out of stock, so I settled for common grade which turned out just fine. The stock is 2 1/4 inches wide and 3/8 of an inch in thickness. 3/8 of an inch is just enough to allow for countersinking and plugging. The plugs were cut from waste stock at first using a two tine plug cutter. letter a puchased a Fuller 3/8" plug cutter with 4 tines and this worked much better, and is highly recommended. (I should have remembered this from my wood boat days!)

The tongue and groove for the cabin sole installed over the 3/4 inch plywood underlayment and was beddeded in a traditional bedding compound called "Dolfinite." This product is not stocked by West Marine and such stores - I obtained this from Fisheries Supply from my old home of Seattle. They have a great catalog for boatbuilders! I did not want to use epoxy here, but wanted to make sure water would noy get btween the plywood and tongue and groove. The ceiling was varnished on the reverse side to seal the wood before it was attached to the 5/8 x 1 strips of fir epoxied to the hull. Stainless steel wood screws were used thoughout.

The first coat of Interlux Rubbed Effect Interior Varnish has been applied to the cherry. We are looking quite the yacht now! I highly recommend this varnish for interior finishing. I used this on SKYE, and it is tough with a kind of quiet sheen. Many more coats will be applied to the cherry and the rest of the interior.

Shown here is the forward part of the interior and the new cherry sole in the forward cabin. Note the gray painted fiberglass and the teak supports installed in the head area. Teak and forward bulkhead still need to be varnished. This also shows the properly sized limber holes which were originally covered by the tabbing, and were opened up further during this refit. All work here was properly installed with West System epoxy. A 7/8" cherry grating will go here, and should look good! Also note the old black plastic trim on the forward bulhead. This just has to be replaced!!

There is more!! Brass and bronze installed ....
